In the September 19, 2026 edition of the Kingsport Times-News, columnist Ned Jilton II highlighted remarks by Dr. Timothy D. Holder during the Sons of the American Revolution gathering at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park commemorating the 246th anniversary of the Overmountain Men and the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Holder explained why Gen. George Washington was not personally involved in the Southern fighting that led to Kings Mountain. Washington remained in the North, where he faced military, political, logistical, and personnel challenges while coordinating the Continental Army and working closely with the Continental Congress.

Although Washington could not personally direct events in the South, he later sent Generals Nathanael Greene and Daniel Morgan to rebuild and organize the Southern Continental Army. Their campaigns helped turn the tide against the British and ultimately contributed to the movement of British forces toward Yorktown, where Washington joined the Southern forces for the decisive victory in 1781.

The anniversary observance continues at Sycamore Shoals with the annual Overmountain Muster and other living history activities recalling the men whose march culminated in the American victory at Kings Mountain.
