The Overmountain Muster returned to Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton on September 19-20, 2026, commemorating the 246th anniversary of the historic gathering of the Overmountain Men and their march to the Battle of Kings Mountain.
The weekend featured living historians and 18th-century demonstrations portraying the events of September 1780, when frontier militia gathered at Sycamore Shoals before setting out in search of British Major Patrick Ferguson. Thirteen days later, these farmers, hunters, tradesmen, and other frontiersmen defeated Ferguson's forces at Kings Mountain, South Carolina, on October 7, 1780.
Sycamore Shoals Museum Curator Chad Bogart described the Battle of Kings Mountain as a pivotal American victory that forced the British to alter their Southern strategy and helped set the stage for the eventual British surrender at Yorktown the following year.
As the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence, the annual Overmountain Muster provides an opportunity to remember the important role the frontier communities of East Tennessee played in the struggle for independence.
