On Saturday, May 2, 2026, the Kings Mountain Chapter dedicated a Liberty Tree at the Bowman-Bogart Cabin in Unicoi, Tennessee. The tree was dedicated in honor of General Evan Shelby, the original owner of the land grant on which the Bowman-Bogart Cabin now stands.
Born in Wales in 1719, Evan Shelby came to this region about 1771. He was a veteran of Braddock’s Campaign and Lord Dunmore’s War, commanded a successful expedition against the Chickamauga towns in 1779, served in the North Carolina State Senate in 1781, and was appointed brigadier general of militia. He also declined the governorship of the State of Franklin in 1787. He died on December 4, 1794, and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Bristol, Tennessee.
The Kings Mountain Chapter was honored to be joined by members of the Mary Patton DAR Chapter and the Watauga Chapter of the SAR for this special ceremony.
